Do you know how many working days there are until Christmas? Enough? Too many? Or is it an irrelevant question because the way your in tray looks at the moment you won’t be taking a break? People convince themselves that everything must be finished before the holiday and so impose a lot of unnecessary pressure on themselves and those around them. Although it’s satisfying to finalise everything before Christmas, you don’t want to push yourself so hard that you end up spending the whole break recovering rather than enjoying your time off. Some steps to take:

• Be realistic about what can and can’t be done.

• Start thinking and planning early.

• Make a list of your most urgent tasks in order of priority.

• Delegate where possible.

Approaching even the most daunting workload in an organised way helps make things feel manageable. You’ll work more effectively and may even have time to do some of the things not on the top priority list – and then you can relax and enjoy your break.
