Age is no barrier for an apprenticeship

I was afraid of training because my age meant I would be a lot older than the other apprentices, which put me off wanting to start an apprenticeship. I didn’t want to start at the bottom of the career ladder again as I had worked in a bar for 6 years but I and although I love front of house, I wanted a career in cooking .

  1. How did Work & Training help you reach your vision?

I approached Work & Training to see how they could help me achieve my goal of becoming a chef. As a qualified chef himself, Andrew took the fear out of training by being a fantastic role model. I worked over a period of twelve months to achieve my qualification. With the help of Work & Training I got great results and was immediately employed in the same kitchen where I did my training.

  2. How did Work & Training help you reach your vision?

To celebrate my graduation I was shouted a trip to Tetsuya’ restaurant in Sydney by my family where I had the honour of meeting one of Australia’s best chefs. He presented me with one of his cookbooks and two of his own knives. Fantastic! I now work for a local restaurant and I love it! Best of all I don’t feel that my age is a problem and there are heaps of opportunities for me to advance in my career.
