What was holding you back?
My last job was several years ago and I lacked the self- confidence to put myself out there again. I knew that I wanted to do something meaningful in my life but I was really unsure as to what that was or how I could get there – I didn’t know what direction I wanted my life to take.

How did you overcome those barriers?
I was attending monthly meetings with an Employment Consultant at Work & Training, and during one of them the Access Course was explained to me. This course would give me the chance to participate in a class, gain some skills and participate in a work placement. I thought that it would be a great opportunity for me.

What was the outcome?
Completing the course opened my eyes to the career possibilities around me – it showed me options that I didn’t think were within my reach. My self-confidence grew throughout the course and I made several new friends. Having the chance to work in a kitchen for my work placement gave me the exposure to work that I needed, as well as the opportunity to gain up-to-date skills. Towards the end of the course, I suffered a financial set back, and I thought I was going to lose my house through not being able to meet the repayments. Then I received a phone call that made a huge difference to my life. Work & Training had a position available in a hospital as an apprentice chef and I was given the opportunity to have an interview for this position. I went to the interview and was successful. The changes that this new job has made to my life have been monumental. I am working full- time, my house repayments are being made and my self- confidence has grown. Overall, it has been a fantastic experience for me.
