What was holding your business back?
Our business needed to expand and we were keen for our 4th year construction apprentice to complete his training and be given the opportunity to work independently as a fully qualified tradesperson.
The apprentice had few difficulties within the workplace, however inadequate literacy & numeracy skills were affecting his ability to read and use specific documentation related to OH&S and, to pass tests in remaining units in his final year of apprenticeship training. -
How did W&T help you reach your vision?
Work & Training assisted by providing training, through the DEEWR - WELL program, in our workplace and during times which did not interfere with the running of the business.
Literacy skills were developed to assist the apprentice to be able to read and use specific documents, for example our apprentice needed to be able to write job safety analysis (JSA) , write reports and read material safety data sheets (MSDS).
The literacy and numeracy skill training also supported our apprentice as he completed his training modules and eventually passed all of the outstanding units of competency in his trade qualification. -
What was the outcome?
The training assisted our apprentice with the literacy and numeracy skills to complete workplace documentation as well as to fulfil the requirements for the certificate 3 in construction qualification. Since qualifying the former apprentice has joined our team as a valued tradesperson and is currently working independantly on a residential project South of Hobart.p>
