Temp of the Year Award 2009

Posted on Wednesday, 21 October 2009

The Temp of The Year was announced in Hobart tonight at a ceremony in Hobart.

The award, which was presented by Alderman Rob Valentine, this annual award recognises the achievements of the temp employees working in Tasmania.

The winner of the sixth Temp of the Year Award is Shanelle Bowerman.

Shanelle decided to become a temp because of the opportunity to choose her own hours. This suited her as it gave her more family time with her young daughter. Her skills, are quite varied, she is a trained chef and talented receptionist.

Shanelle was nominated by One Care where she assists in the office on a needs basis. She has also secured a permanent part time roll enabling her to still work as a temp.

‘Temps can be the forgotten workers, as they are not part of the social network within the organisation’, said Lorraine Bennett State-wide Manager of The People Source. ‘Our business runs of having a team of quality temps available at short notice, many Hobart businesses would be struggling to meet their deadlines if it were not for these dedicated temps’.

‘Temps play a very important part in the employment market. They assist organisations to buy in talent for such times as emergencies, planned vacancies and peak work loads. Permanent employment positions are not always the best options for business,’ said Mrs Bennett.

‘The reality is that a significant percentage of temps placed in business are offered permanent positions in a relatively short space of time.’
